Description: "Montana's best-preserved ghost
town" was never built to last. Garnet, Montana began as a
humble gold-mining camp deep within the Garnet Range, but by
January 1898 the town had boomed to 1,000 residents, a school
with 40 students and a healthy variety of businesses,
including a candy and cigar shop, a Chinese laundry,
and thirteen saloons. During the winter, two historic miner's
cabins are available for rent through a wintertrail system for
snowmobilers, cross-country skiers, and snowshoers

follow Highway 200E,
turn south on the gravel Garnet Range Road at the sign
between mile markers 21 and 22.
Garnet is 11 miles down the Garnet Range Road, approximately 40
miles east of Missoula.

| What kind of visit you can have:
Preserved but not restored. Garnet is a Ghost town
where the deterioration of the buildings is fought, but
they are not restored to usable condition. Some are open
to enter. A Visitor Center tells about the
town and provides information on walking tours of the
buildings. Wheeled vehicles are prohibited winter
months, but snowmobiles and skiers can reach the site |
