Description: Confederate Fort which
protected Wilmington harbor from Federal blockade until January
1865. Remnants of defensive works that once
included one mile of sea defense and 1/3 mile of land defense include
the reconstruction of a 32 pounder seacoast gun , as part of
the 10% of the original fort with a restored palisade fence
and visitor center with video of the fort history.

| What kind of visit you can have:
Once the largest earthwork fort in the South, called the
"Gibraltar of the South", this fort guarded
the mouth of the Cape Fear River. Less 10 percent
remains, with 180 yards of of land face on the river
side and 75 yards on the ocean side, with a restored gun
emplacement and museum in the visitor center.
Guided tours are given daily, 1 1/2 hours apart |
