Fort
Kearney State Historic Park
|
| . |
Description: Erected in 1848 to replace an
earlier fort, it guarded the Oregon Trail during the Gold Rush
era, became a stagecoach and freight caravan stop and a Pony
Express home station, and ultimately provided protection for
Union Pacific Railroad construction crews. It was
abandoned and dismantled in 1871. Recent archaeological
exploration has led to development of an interpretive center,
blacksmith-carpenter shop, and construction a stockade around
the parade ground.
