Description: The site was home to the Howell
Iron Works, at it's peak between the 1830s and 1850. At
one time more than 400 people supported the bog iron (obtained
from iron oxide in decayed swamp plants) operation. The
village includes worker row houses, now the visitor center, a blacksmith
& tin shop, general store, carpenters shop, bakery, and
remnants of the iron forge, among others.
