Stanwix National Monument

Description: Reconstructed wooden stockade
fort originally build in 1758, this fort was intended to
protect settlers in the Mohawk Valley. When it was
besieged during the Revolution, the original relief force was
ambushed in one of the bloodiest battles of the war.
Today the fort is entered by a wooden bridge. The Gregg
Barracks contains the Visitor Center.

| What kind of visit you can have:
Reconstructed fort is located in downtown Rome, entered
over a wooden bridge to the Gregg Barracks, which houses
a Visitor Center that contains a diorama, theater, and
bookstore. There is a 5 minute slide on the archaeology
of the site in the casemate, and beyond that the fort.
